Baseball Recap: Laurel Has No Trouble Against Northwestern

While Laurel put up some runs on Friday, the same can't be said for Northwestern. The Spartans put the hurt on the Wildcats with a sharp 10-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won four games by six runs or more so far this season.

CJ DeTurris made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out ten over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Laurel is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-7 otherwise. DeTurris was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Emerson Sanchez-Gomerez was incredible, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with four stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. Josh LaClair was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.

Laurel was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Northwestern only posted a batting average of .118.

Laurel has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. As for Northwestern, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-10.

Coincidentally, Laurel and Northwestern will both be playing Eleanor Roosevelt the next time they take the field. The Spartans will head out to face the Raiders at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, while the Wildcats will head out to face them at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
