Softball Recap: Erwin Warriors vs. Mitchell Mountaineers

Erwin's game last Wednesday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Friday. They put the hurt on the Mitchell Mountaineers with a sharp 14-6 win. The Warriors might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by eight runs or more this season.

Kylie Gingras was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off nine hits. Gingras was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. Those three runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Erwin got a massive performance out of Jessica Varillas, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5. That's the most runs Varillas has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Camdin Shelton, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles.

Erwin kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Erwin has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. Mitchell is on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-7.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Erwin will venture away from home to challenge North Buncombe at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. North Buncombe's pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so Erwin's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Mitchell, they will head out to face off against University School at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Mitchell is facing University School at the right time seeing as University School is stuck on a seven-game losing streak.
