High school baseball rankings: Reno, Saint Francis, Villa Park re-enter MaxPreps Top 25 with strong playoff runs

No. 1 St. Mary's Prep could pass active win-streak mark held by Oklahoma's Silo by season's end.

Three teams that had resided in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings earlier in the season return after strong playoff performances.

Reno, which had earlier defeated Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) and Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.), dropped out of the MaxPreps Top 25 last week after falling to Bishop Manogue. However, the Huskies avenged that loss in the North Region Class 4A with a 3-1 win and advanced to the state tournament where they face a rematch with Bishop Gorman.

Saint Francis (Mountain View, Calif.) also avenged an earlier loss, defeating Valley Christian (San Jose) in the finals of the West Catholic Athletic League tournament.

Villa Park (Calif.) also returned after advancing to the Southern Section Division 1 semifinals. Up next is defending Division 1 champion JSerra Catholic.

West Monroe had the highest debut as it benefited from Barbe's quarterfinal loss to beat Dutchtown in the bottom of the seventh and then besting St. Amant to win the Louisiana Class 5A state championship. The Rebels debut at No. 13.

Dropped out: No.13. Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.); No. 14. Dutchtown (Geismar, La.); No. 18. St. Amant (La.); No. 19 Barbe (Lake Charles, La.); 24. Tate (Cantonment, Fla.)

Best game: West Monroe 6, Dutchtown 5. Trey Hawsey's home run in the bottom of the seventh gave West Monroe the walk-off victory in the Louisiana Class 5A semifinals. West Monroe went on to win the championship with a win over St. Amant.

Player of the Week: Jake Dresselhouse, St. Mary's Prep. In a five-game stretch, he had 13 RBI, including five in the first game against De La Salle Collegiate and four RBI in the second game.

Games to watch: Reno vs. Bishop Gorman. The Huskies won the first meeting between the two teams. This time the winner advances to the Class 4A state championship game and the loser likely drops out of the MaxPreps Top 25.

Streaks: Silo (Okla.) ended its season last week with a 30-0 record, a fifth straight Class 2A state championship and 58 straight wins. That streak may be in danger, however, since No. 1 St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.) continues to rack up impressive wins. The Eaglets are also 30-0 and won 22 straight to end the 2021 season.
