Recap: Mercer Cardinals vs. Green City Gophers
Even though the Green City Gophers scored an imposing 66 points on Tuesday, the Mercer Cardinals still came out on top. Mercer sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 68-66 win over Green City. The victory was just business as usual for Mercer, who after three games remain undefeated this season.
Green City's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Macy Jeffries, who scored 22 points along with 6 assists and 4 steals, and Jaryn Hatcher who scored 20 points along with 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Hatcher scored a full 30.3% of Green City's points, the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Lily Crist was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with 5 assists and 4 steals.
Mercer's victory bumped their record up to 3-0. As for Green City, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-1.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mercer will take on Tri-County at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Tri-County will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Missouri Rankings (they are ranked 314th, while Mercer is ranked 36th). As for Green City, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Grundy County/Newtown-Harris at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Grundy County/Newtown-Harris focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Monday.
