Basketball Recap: Cardinal Newman Takes a Tough Playoff Loss

Cardinal Newman and Wilson Hall squared off in some playoff action on Saturday, but Cardinal Newman had to settle for second. They were beaten by the Wilson Hall Barons 69-32. The Cardinals' loss continues a trend for the team, making it ten in a row.

Despite the defeat, Cardinal Newman saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Luis Echevarria on his way to 23 points. The matchup was Echevarria's ninth in a row with at least 16 points.

Leading Wilson Hall to victory were Ford Wilder and Shawn Michael Matthews. Wilder to rack up 20 points and three steals, while Matthews en route to 12 points and seven assists. Matthews is also on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 50% in the last six games he's played. Another player making a difference was Michael Lauzon, who posted 12 points.

Cardinal Newman's loss dropped their record down to 8-16. As for Wilson Hall, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 12 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-9 record this season.
