Preview: Churchill County Greenwave vs. South Tahoe Vikings
Churchill County is 9-1 against South Tahoe since December of 2016, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Churchill County Greenwave will be home for the holidays to greet the South Tahoe Vikings at 3:00 p.m. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Churchill County entered their tilt with Sparks with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Churchill County claimed a resounding 55-14 victory over Sparks at home. Churchill County might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team's won three matches by 34 points or more this season.
Churchill County found their leader in underclassman Jada Anastasio, who scored 18 points along with six steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Anastasio has scored at least 25% of Churchill County's points. Karlie Simper was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds.
Meanwhile, South Tahoe's game last Tuesday was all tied up 22-22 at the half, but luckily for them it didn't stay that way. In a tight matchup that could have gone either way, they made off with a 51-50 victory over Galena. The victory made it back-to-back wins for South Tahoe.
Campbell Mathews was her usual excellent self, scoring 21 points along with nine rebounds. The matchup was her sixth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ava Wolfe, who scored 14 points.
Churchill County's victory ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 7-2. As for South Tahoe, the win got them back to even at 3-3.
Friday's contest is shaping up to be a scrappy match: Churchill County have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 36.3 rebounds per game. It's a different story for South Tahoe, though, as they've been averaging only 35.2 rebounds per game. Given Churchill County's sizeable advantage in that area, South Tahoe will need to find a way to close that gap.
Churchill County came up short against South Tahoe in their previous meeting back in January, falling 53-40. Thankfully for Churchill County, Ivy Gonzalez (who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 14 rebounds) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
