League recap: Morenci extends winning streak with victory over Thatcher

Morenci extended the longest winning streak in V Section III this week by beating Thatcher, 26-14. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Wildcats.

Tanque Verde fell to Bisbee 52-6 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Gregory Villareal was a force in the backfield as Willcox bested Camp Verde.

Villareal was a passing and rushing force as the Cowboys defeated the Cowboys. Villareal's key target this week was Chris Granado, who caught 3 passes for 59 yards.

Freddy Contreras put up the best numbers through the air as the Pumas beat the Hawks. He finished with a total of 4 completions for 47 yards and 2 touchdowns. Contreras' favorite target this week was Spencer Schuller, who caught 6 passes for 122 yards.

Thanks to the talents of Jake Whitfield and Villareal, Willcox has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Whitfield leads the league in passing with 1,261 yards, while Villareal has rushed for 1,416 yards this season. Bisbee's Schuller leads the league in receiving yards with 714 on 38 catches.

The Eagles' offense has scored 336 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while Morenci has allowed only 137 on the year.

Thatcher's Heath Motes needs only 18 yards against Frank Ogas' team next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 128 carries Motes has put up 982 yards this year.

An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Dave Jefferies' team takes on the Wildcats. As it stands, the Eagles are in first, while Morenci is in third.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Thatcher takes on the Wildcats. The Eagles have allowed 164 points this season, while Morenci has given up 137. Thatcher allowed 26 points last week as it lost to the Wildcats.

Jack kortsen's team and Camp Verde played the closest game in the league this week, with jack kortsen's team eventually emerging with a 25-20 victory. Villareal ran for 229 yards in the win.
