Valley Regional took a seven-run defeat the last time they faced off against Hale Ray, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Warriors narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Noises 12-11. The victory was nothing new for the Warriors as they're now sitting on four straight.
Paige Williams made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and eight unearned) runs off 14 hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
In other batting news, Carley Spearrin was incredible, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Nataly Pavon-Avila, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
Valley Regional always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hale Ray only posted an OBP of .439.
Valley Regional's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-3. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.2 runs over those games. As for Hale Ray, their loss ended an eight-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 8-2.
We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Valley Regional will square off against rival Coginchaug Regional at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Hale Ray is set to take on their familiar foe North Branford at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Noises 2.6, the Thunderbirds 1.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
