Softball Game Preview: Alcona Tigers vs. Oscoda Owls

The Alcona Tigers will take on the Oscoda Owls at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Alcona has given up an average of 8 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Alcona came up short against Tawas Area on Tuesday, falling 11-1.

Meanwhile, Oscoda made easy work of Heston Academy on Monday and carried off a 13-1 win. Considering the Owls have won three matches by more than eight runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Kingsley Backstrom was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). Backstrom was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

In other batting news, Luella Whipkey was a standout: she fired off two home runs and three RBI while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Emma Michaud, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs.

Oscoda was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .440. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Alcona's defeat dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Oscoda, they now have a winning record of 4-3.

Alcona took their victory against Oscoda in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 16-1 score. Do the Tigers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Owls turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
