Basketball Recap: Grand Canyon Takes a Loss

If Grand Canyon was riding high fresh off their 44-12 takedown of Greyhills Academy last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Grand Canyon Phantoms fell 47-36 to the Williams Vikings on Saturday. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Phantoms this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 45-36 last Monday.

Despite the loss, Grand Canyon still got an impressive performance from Jaemie Jensen, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten steals. That was a full 58.3% of Grand Canyon's points, marking the 14th time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. Xochitl Jiminez was another key player, putting up seven points along with six boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Grand Canyon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in nine consecutive games.

Grand Canyon has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-9 record this season. As for Williams, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 8-4.

Grand Canyon wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 40-39 victory against Music Mountain on the 17th. Williams has also already played their next game, a 58-30 win against BASIS Flagstaff on the 14th.
