Basketball Recap: Tuesday's Loss Ends Northern Guilford's Winning Streak

Despite a phenomenal run in the regular season, Northern Guilford couldn't carry that success into this playoff game. They took a 74-55 bruising from the Watauga Pioneers on Tuesday. The Nighthawks' loss signaled the end of their six-game winning streak.

Despite the defeat, Northern Guilford saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Leena McField dropped a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. McField's big performance that evening made it eight games in a row in which she has scored at least 20 points. Another player making a difference was Cara Trippett, who went 6-for-15 en route to 16 points.

Kate Sears was her usual excellent self, dropping a triple-double with 32 points, 16 boards, and 11 assists for Watauga. That makes it six consecutive games in which Sears has scored at least a third of Watauga's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Julie Matheson, who shot 89% from the field to rack up 18 points.

Northern Guilford's loss dropped their record down to 20-8. As for Watauga, they pushed their record up to 22-5 with the victory, which was their seventh straight at home.

Northern Guilford does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Watauga, they will head out to face off against Lake Norman at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Lake Norman's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 19 matches.
