Softball Recap: Effingham Gets the Win

Effingham won the last time they faced St. Anthony and things went their way on Friday too. The Flaming Hearts came out on top against the Bulldogs by a score of 4-1. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Flaming Hearts.

Layla McBride spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Sydney Cunningham was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April.

Effingham hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in seven consecutive matchups.

Effingham's win bumped their record up to 19-10. As for St. Anthony, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 14-11.

Coming up, Effingham will head out on the road to take on Mattoon at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. The last three games the Greenwave have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one. As for St. Anthony, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Pana at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Panthers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.73 runs per game on average), something the Bulldogs will no doubt try to take advantage of.
