Basketball Game Preview: Overton Eagles vs. Amherst Broncos

The Overton Eagles will face off against the Amherst Broncos at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.

Overton will head into Friday's matchup eager for some revenge after what happened against Shelton: Overton managed to slip by Shelton the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. Overton was outmatched by Shelton and fell 61-25. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 170th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 46th).

The losing side was boosted by Gracen Hughes, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 13 boards. Those 13 rebounds gave her a new career-high.

Meanwhile, Amherst didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Ansley/Litchfield on Thursday, but they still walked away with a 40-35 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Broncos.

Amherst's win came from a few key players Overton will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Libby Mitchell, who posted ten points. Another player making a difference was AnnDee Jaixen, who had eight points.

Amherst's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-5. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.7 points per game. As for Overton, they now have a losing record at 4-5.

Overton was able to grind out a solid victory over Amherst when the teams last played back in January of 2024, winning 54-42. Does Overton have another victory up their sleeve, or will Amherst turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
