Softball Recap: Vermilion Comes Up Short

Vermilion had lost five straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 1-8 to make it six. They came up short against the Port Clinton Redskins, falling 8-1. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Redskins this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 15-12 two weeks ago.

For Port Clinton's part, Ashton Sanchez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up ten Ks. Sanchez has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Olivia Emerson, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, one triple, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabby Howard, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Vermilion will be taking part in a tournament against Ontario at 5:00 p.m. on the 13th. As for Port Clinton, they will challenge Margaretta at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Polar Bears have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.2 runs per game on average), something the Redskins will no doubt try to take advantage of.
