Baseball Game Preview: Mt. Vernon Rams vs. Charleston Trojans

The Mt. Vernon Rams will square off against the Charleston Trojans at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Mt. Vernon has given up an average of 7.3 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Mt. Vernon fell victim to Belleville East and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They lost 13-0 to the Lancers. The Rams haven't had much luck with the Lancers recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.

Mt. Vernon saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tyler Curry, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one double. That double marked the first that Curry hit this season.

Meanwhile, Charleston can bid farewell to their six-game losing streak thanks to their game on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 9-1 margin over Shelbyville.

Phoenix Lofton looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Charleston is 2-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 0-5 otherwise.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Russell Applegate, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, five RBI, and two runs. Luke Bonnstetter was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.

Mt. Vernon's loss dropped their record down to 2-8. As for Charleston, their win bumped their record up to 2-6.
