Softball Game Preview: Newark Memorial Cougars vs. Burlingame Panthers

The Newark Memorial Cougars will face off against the Burlingame Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Newark Memorial will be strutting in after a victory while Burlingame will be coming in after a loss.

Newark Memorial took a six-run defeat the last time they faced off against Dougherty Valley, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Newark Memorial skirted past Dougherty Valley 6-4.

Ariana Romo made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 17 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. Romo was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-2.

In other batting news, Andrea Tall was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Chloe Hastings, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Newark Memorial always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .520. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.

Meanwhile, Burlingame unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They lost 11-0 to St. Ignatius College Preparatory on Wednesday.

Newark Memorial came up short against Burlingame when the teams last played back in March of 2024, falling 9-4. Can Newark Memorial avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
