Basketball Recap: Martinsville's Luck Changes for the Better on Saturday

Martinsville posted their closest win since November 1, 2023 on Saturday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Southport Cardinals 46-44. The Artesians have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Cardinals, too.

Martinsville's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Layla Mallery led the charge by going 6 for 14 on her way to 14 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jade Meade, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten boards.

Martinsville smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in three consecutive games.

Despite the loss, Southport still got an impressive performance from Kassie Mcmasters, who went 8 of 14 on her way to 22 points and eight rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaniah Davis, who posted four points and six rebounds.

With the win, Martinsville broke their six-game losing streak and moved their record to 3-11. As for Southport, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-6.

Martinsville will square off against Decatur Central at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Southport, they will face off against Shelbyville at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
