Basketball Recap: Riverside Chargers vs. Heartland Lutheran Red Hornets
Riverside was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They were one points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 37-36 heartbreaker at the hands of the Heartland Lutheran Red Hornets. The Chargers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Red Hornets apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Tessa Weltruski and Grace Mahony certainly did their best on Thursday to avoid the loss. Weltruski posted 13 points and eight rebounds, while Mahony had five points along with 11 rebounds and five assists. Mahony is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last seven games she's played. Addy Seamann was another key player, putting up five points.
They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Riverside was working as a unit and finished the game with 11 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive matches.
Heartland Lutheran's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ella Francl, who put up 13 points along with eight boards and four steals. The dominant performance gave Francl a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Abby VanBibber, who posted eight points in addition to 11 rebounds and three blocks.
Riverside's defeat dropped their record down to 1-10. As for Heartland Lutheran, their record is now 4-7.
Riverside wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 41-35 win against Shelby-Rising City on the 10th.
