Baseball Game Preview: Hialeah Thoroughbreds vs. Varela Vipers

The Hialeah Thoroughbreds will face off against the Varela Vipers at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Thursday just wasn't the day for Hialeah's offense. They lost 10-0 to Coral Gables on Thursday. The defeat continues a trend for the Thoroughbreds in their meetings with the Cavaliers: they've now lost three in a row.

Hialeah saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Devin Gil, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.

Meanwhile, Varela got themselves on the board against South Dade on Thursday, but South Dade never followed suit. They were the clear victors by a 7-0 margin over the Buccaneers. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Vipers.

Varela also got a great performance from Andy Espinoza as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over six innings pitched. Espinoza has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Jonathan Paniagua, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one triple. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Alejandro Ponte, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Hialeah's loss dropped their record down to 6-10. As for Varela, their record is now 15-6-2.

Hialeah couldn't quite get it done against Varela when the teams last played back in April of 2023 as they fell 6-1. Can the Thoroughbreds avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
