Baseball Recap: Menomonie Gets the Win

Menomonie took a eight-run loss the last time they faced off against Wausau East, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Mustangs skirted past the Lumberjacks 6-4. While the Mustangs didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-16), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Cade Lamb looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Menomonie let Landon Middlestadt and Charlie Mikesell run wild. Middlestadt got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run and two runs, while Mikesell went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave Mikesell a new career-high. Taylor Mars was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI.

Menomonie's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-4. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Wausau East, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost eight of their last nine matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season.

Menomonie will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Holmen at 11:00 a.m. The Mustangs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Vikings have averaged an impressive 6.5 runs per game this season. As for Wausau East, they are taking a road trip to face off against Merrill at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
