Volleyball Game Preview: Layton Lancers vs. Syracuse Titans

The Layton Lancers will venture away from home to take on the Syracuse Titans at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Last Tuesday, Layton came up short against Weber and fell 3-1. The Lancers have struggled against the Warriors recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.

The loss didn't mean the game wasn't competitive: Weber scored at least 18 points in every set. The match finished with set scores of 25-18, 25-21, 18-25, 25-18.

Meanwhile, Syracuse faced Davis in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Titans blew past the Darts 3-0. The win was nothing new for the Titans as they're now sitting on four straight.

While Syracuse might've won, it sure wasn't easy: Davis scored at least 18 points in every set they played. The final score came out to 25-18, 28-26, 25-23.

Layton better keep an eye on Ian Sprague. He was instrumental in Syracuse's win, getting 11 digs and two aces.

Syracuse's victory bumped their record up to 11-3. As for Layton, they now have a losing record of 5-6.

Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Thursday's game: Layton has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 6.1 aces per game. However, it's not like Syracuse struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.7 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Layton suffered a grim 3-0 defeat to Syracuse in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Lancers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
