Softball Recap: Athens Wins Going Away Against Decatur

Athens's game on Tuesday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 17-2 margin over the Decatur Red Raiders. The result was nothing new for the Golden Eagles, who have now won 12 matches by eight runs or more so far this season.

Lily Lowery and Jaicey Harty made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Lowery pitched three innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Meanwhile, Harty tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. At the plate, Lowery went 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs, while Harty got on base in three of her four plate appearances with four stolen bases and three runs. That's the most stolen bases Harty has posted since back in February.

In other batting news, Abby Lopez was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two doubles. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Caitlyn Tedford, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with seven stolen bases and two runs.

Athens always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .697. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Decatur only posted an OBP of .312.

Athens pushed their record up to 21-12 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.7 runs over those games. As for Decatur, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 11 of their last 12 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-25 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens will be taking part in a tournament against Wilson at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Decatur, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Lee at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
