Softball Game Preview: Nelson vs. Gresham Gophers

Nelson will venture away from home to take on the Gresham Gophers at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Gresham took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Nelson, who comes in off a win.

On Thursday, Nelson made easy work of Clackamas and carried off an 11-1 win. The victory continues a trend for Nelson in their matchups with Clackamas: they've now won five in a row.

Sofia Forbito spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Ellie Nix and Abigail Huspek did most of the damage at the plate: Nix went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and three RBI, while Huspek went 2-for-3 with three runs and two doubles. That's the most runs Huspek has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Alyvia Pietsch, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

They weren't the only ones working in the home run department: Nelson lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, after a string of seven wins, Gresham's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They fell 9-4 to Central Catholic.

Suntaya Riddle was cooking despite her team's loss, earning two runs and two stolen bases.

Gresham's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 11-5. As for Nelson, their win bumped their record up to 7-9.

Nelson suffered a grim 12-5 defeat to Gresham when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can Nelson avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
