The Sayre Spartans will take on the Corbin Redhounds at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.
Corbin will be up against a hot Sayre squad: the team just extended their winning streak to six. Sayre blew past West Jessamine 12-1 on Monday. Considering the Spartans have won three games by more than ten runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Charlie Slabaugh was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Slabaugh was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Sayre got a big performance out of Brody Beall, who scored a run while going 3-for-3. Those hits marked the first that Beall got this season. Reed Beatty was another key player, scoring a run while going 3-for-3.
Sayre hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as West Jessamine struck out seven times.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Corbin). Everything went their way against Southwestern on Monday as Corbin made off with a 14-5 win. The victory continues a trend for the Redhounds in their matchups with the Warriors: they've now won six in a row.
Like Sayre, Corbin also got a great game from a two-way player: Lucas Tarvin. He pitched five innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. Tarvin has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 3-for-3. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Noah Cima was a standout: he scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in May of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Cam Estep, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4.
Corbin now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Sayre, their win bumped their record up to 5-0.
Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Sayre has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .511. However, it's not like Corbin struggles in that department as they've averaged .467. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Sayre came out on top in a nail-biter against Corbin when the teams last played back in May of 2023, sneaking past 4-3. Does Sayre have another victory up their sleeve, or will Corbin turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
