Baseball Recap: Arvada West Drops Season-High Score on Northfield

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Arvada West). Everything went their way against the Northfield Nighthawks on Wednesday as they made off with a 19-1 victory. Considering the Wildcats have won eight contests by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Cooper Vais was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That triple was his first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Keegan Millikan, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI and two runs. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. Tate Deal was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Arvada West always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .719. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Arvada West pushed their record up to 14-2-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Northfield, with the defeat, they broke their 13-game winning streak and moved their record to 13-2.

Arvada West and Northfield should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings. The Wildcats (ranked fifth) will meet Columbine (ranked 95th) at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Northfield will take on Montbello at 4:15 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (14 vs. 198).
