Softball Recap: New Athens Wins Going Away Against Father Mcgivney Catholic

After only one run in their last game, New Athens made sure to put some runs up on the board against Father McGivney Catholic on Monday. The Yellow Jackets were the clear victors by a 10-2 margin over the Griffins. For the Yellow Jackets, this counts as revenge for the 11-3 win the Griffins walked away with the last time they faced one another back in April of 2023.

Mallory Kohnen and Bethany Dachsteiner made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Kohnen didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Dachsteiner struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up a single walk in six consecutive appearances. At bat, Kohnen got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one run and one RBI, while Dachsteiner went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that Dachsteiner has hit this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Nora Hager, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Jamie Wilson was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run and one double.

New Athens kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

With the victory, New Athens broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 8-6. As for Father McGivney Catholic, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-9.

New Athens didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next match, an 11-3 loss against Marissa/Coulterville on the 6th. As for Father McGivney Catholic, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 16-1 defeat against Mascoutah on the 1st.
