Baseball Recap: National Trail Comes Up Short

National Trail fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Tri-County North on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 4-3. The Blazers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Panthers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

Mason Leal was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 16 batters over 9.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. Leal was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in five of his six plate appearances. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season.

In other batting news, Braylon Coffey was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one double, and one RBI. Mason Cordle was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-5.

The defeat snapped National Trail's winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 3-5 record. As for Tri-County North, their win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-1.

Coming up, National Trail will take on Twin Valley South at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Tri-County North, they wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 15-2 victory against New Miami on the 12th.
