Softball Recap: Westville Finds Playoff Glory Versus Tri-Township

It's playoff time, and Westville had no trouble coming through when it counted. They put the hurt on the Tri-Township Tigers with a sharp 20-3 win on Monday. The result was nothing new for the Blackhawks, who have now won ten games by seven runs or more so far this season.

Miranda Sparks and Kierstin Vargas made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Sparks pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Meanwhile, Vargas pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 17 consecutive appearances. At the plate, Sparks went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple, while Vargas fired off two home runs, five RBI, and one double while going 3-for-4. Those four RBI gave Sparks a new career-high.

In other batting news, Lily Green and Addison Chontos did most of the damage at the plate: Green went 3-for-4 with four runs, two RBI, and one double, while Chontos went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most runs Chontos has posted over her last nine matchups. Molly O'Brien was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

The victory was the fourth in a row for Westville, bringing their record up to 17-5. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games. As for Tri-Township, they are on an 18-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-16.

Looking ahead, Westville will take on Washington Township at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Tri-Township does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
