Basketball Recap: Gates County Comes Up Short

Gates County lost against Martin County back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Gates County Red Barons lost to the Martin County Gators at home by a 64-45 margin. While losing is never fun, the Red Barons can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 447th, while the Gators are ranked 204th).

Martin County found their leader in sophomore Jordan Matthewson, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 15 boards. Matthewson has been hot for a while, having posted eight or more rebounds the last 11 times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kel'Javious Moore, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 15 boards.

This is the second loss in a row for Gates County and nudges their season record down to 6-12. As for Martin County, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Washington County the next time they take the court. Martin County will host Washington County at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while Gates County will host them at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
