Kayla Bonstrom of Canyon Del Oro (Arizona) is the MVP, and Northern coach Robert Radford is named Coach of the Year after his fifth-straight state championship.

The crowning of Keystone (La Grange, Ohio) as the nation's No. 1 softball team in the country was one indication that 2012 was a good year for medium-sized schools.

Identified as schools in enrollment divisions with with between 1,000 and 2,000 students, medium-sized schools accounted for 17 of the 60 players on the MaxPreps All-American Softball Team including MVP Kenzie Conrad of Keystone.

Additionally, 15 players from medium-sized schools were recognized as the overall state player of the year, regardless of division.

Thus this year's MaxPreps Medium Schools All-American Softball Team is loaded with talent, starting with medium schools MVP Kayla Bonstrom of Canyon del Oro. Since Conrad already received the MaxPreps overall National Player of the Year honor, we have decided to additionally honor Bonstrom as her outstanding achievements warrant recognition.

As a pitcher/outfielder on her team, she led Canyon del Oro to the Arizona Division II state championship. Besides batting .603, Bonstrom also hit 16 home runs and 18 doubles and had 63 RBI.

Headed to Stanford next year, Bonstrom was the Gatorade State Player of the Year and was also the Arizona Republic State Player of the Year.

Robert Radford of Northern (Owings, MD), earns the MaxPreps Medium Schools Coach of the Year honor after leading the Patriots to a 25-0 record and the Maryland Class 3A state championship. The Patriots have won five straight Maryland 3A state titles and have the nation's longest win streak at 53 straight games.

Northern also finished No. 4 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Rankings and have two players on the medium schools All-American team.

The 60-member All-American team includes players who were also selected to the MaxPreps All-American team. Some players may play for schools with enrollments over 2,000 or under 1,000, but generally the enrollment division they belong to is mostly populated with schools between those two parameters.
