Baseball Recap: Viola Comes Up Short

Viola extended their losing streak to four on Monday, dropping them down to 3-7. They lost 15-5 to the Izard County Cougars. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Longhorns of the 3-1 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in March of 2024.

Izard County's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-5. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

For Izard County's part, Kade Yancey and Kane Johnson made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Yancey struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. Meanwhile, Johnson tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those eight strikeouts gave Yancey a new career-high. At bat, Yancey got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Johnson went 2-for-5 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one double. Those runs marked the first that Yancey has scored this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Dawson Beard, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Trenton Gilbreath, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.

Looking ahead, Viola will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Jasper at 4:00 p.m. The Longhorns' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Pirates have averaged an impressive 9.8 runs per game this season. Izard County will be paying especially close attention to Viola's game: after Viola faces off against Jasper, they'll take on Izard County again at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
