Basketball Game Preview: Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks vs. Lutheran Lions

Cheyenne Mountain hasn't had much luck against Lutheran recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks will host the Lutheran Lions at 6:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both will really light up the scoreboard.

Last Tuesday, Cheyenne Mountain came up short against Rampart and fell 68-61.

Cheyenne Mountain's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Alex Treglia, who posted 20 points and three steals, and Cayden Cooper, who went 5 for 12 on his way to 15 points and seven boards. Cooper is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last six games he's played. Another player making a difference was Marek Patterson, who earned four points along with six rebounds and five assists.

Even though they lost, Cheyenne Mountain smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Lutheran entered their tilt with Pueblo County on Tuesday with seven consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with eight. They came out on top against the Hornets by a score of 76-64. Given the Lions' advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 24th, while the Hornets are ranked 208th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Lutheran pushed their record up to 10-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 70.5 points per game. As for Cheyenne Mountain, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-2.

Cheyenne Mountain took a serious blow against Lutheran in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, falling 75-44. Can Cheyenne Mountain avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
