Softball Recap: Viola Takes a Loss

Viola extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 7-8 in the process. They came up short against the Concord Pirates, falling 11-1. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Pirates this season, with their most recent loss being a 15-0 defeat two weeks ago.

Cheyenne Newberry made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played.

As for Concord, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 14-7. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.2 runs on average over those games.

On Concord's side, L Cornett spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up 14 Ks.

On the hitting side, M Balentine and L Brackett did most of the damage at the plate: Balentine went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBI, and one double, while Brackett went 3-for-4 with five RBI. Those three hits gave Balentine a new career-high. K Devers was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.

Viola has already played their next contest (against Calico Rock), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Concord, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 19-8 win against Parkview on the 23rd.
