Softball Game Preview: Springfield Spartans vs. East Dragons

The Springfield Spartans will be taking part in a tournament against the East Dragons at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The timing is sure in Springfield's favor as the team sits on three straight wins at home while East has been banged up by six consecutive losses on the road dating back to last season.

Springfield was handed a ten-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Tuesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Coventry, sneaking past 7-6. The victory continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Comets: they've now won three in a row.

Joey Klein spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and three unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Bre Ruggiero, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Melaena Martin, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run.

They weren't the only ones working in the home run department: Springfield lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in April of 2024.

Meanwhile, Monday just wasn't the day for East's offense. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 11-0 to Aquinas, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.

East's defeat dropped their record down to 0-5. As for Springfield, their win bumped their record up to 16-7.
