Recap: Parkland Matadors vs. Canutillo Eagles

The Parkland Matadors struggled with three-point shooting accuracy on Tuesday (the Canutillo Eagles were 21% better) and sadly the final score reflected it. Parkland lost to Canutillo at home by a decisive 65-49 margin. While losing is never fun, Parkland can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 956th, while Canutillo is ranked 388th).

Despite the loss, Parkland saw an underclassman step up: Keandrey Cager scored 15 points. The matchup was Cager's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Jayden Whitt was another key contributor, scoring ten points.

Canutillo's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Austin Bonilla led the charge by scoring 13 points along with three steals. Bonilla has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last nine times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Jordan, who scored ten points.

Parkland's loss dropped their record down to 8-13. As for Canutillo, the victory (which was their tenth in a row) raised their record to 17-5.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Parkland will take on Bel Air at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Bel Air is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses. As for Canutillo, they will be playing at home against Chapin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Chapin knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past four contests -- so hopefully Canutillo likes a good challenge.
