Baseball Recap: Northwestern Regional Takes a Loss

Northwestern Regional extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping their season record down to 5-6 in the process. They came up short against the Canton Warriors, falling 11-0. The match marked the first time this season in which the Highlanders were not able to get on the board.

Northwestern Regional saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Robbie Ayers, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.

As for Canton, they pushed their record up to 7-8 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games.

On Canton's side, Oden Berg was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave Berg a new career-high in strikeouts (three). He was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Canton is 5-1 when Berg posts two or more runs, but 2-7 otherwise.

In other batting news, James Canny was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. He has become a key player for Canton: the team is undefeated when he posts at least three RBI, but 4-8 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Ethan Lindquist, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and one stolen base.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Northwestern Regional will face off against Gilbert-Northwestern Regional at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. As for Canton, they will venture away from home to challenge Northwest Catholic at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
