Baseball Game Preview: Newkirk Tigers vs. Tonkawa Buccaneers

Newkirk is 2-8 against Tonkawa since March of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Tigers will challenge the Buccaneers at 5:00 p.m. One thing working in Newkirk's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last four matchups.

It was a proper cat-fight when Newkirk duked it out with Destiny Christian on Saturday. The Tigers skirted past the Wildcats 12-10. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Tigers have posted since March 11, 2024.

Blake Stowe was excellent, scoring three runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.

Newkirk hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Destiny Christian struck out seven times.

Meanwhile, it may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Tonkawa ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They came out on top against Morrison by a score of 11-8.

Cayden Duvall was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Duvall was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with four RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Tonkawa got a massive performance out of Cason Johnson, who scored four runs while going 3-for-4. Another player making a difference was Westyn Freeman, who scored four runs while getting on base in five of his six plate appearances.

Newkirk is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-8-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Tonkawa, their record now sits at 14-7.

Newkirk couldn't quite finish off Tonkawa in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 and fell 8-6. Can the Tigers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
