Softball Game Preview: Sycamore Spartans vs. Kaneland Knights

Sycamore and Kaneland are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Spartans will challenge the Knights at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Sycamore's pitching crew has only allowed three runs per game this season, so Kaneland's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Sycamore is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Illinois' top teams: LaSalle-Peru, who was ranked 20th at the time (Sycamore was ranked 12th). The Spartans fell just short of the Cavaliers by a score of 3-1 on Monday. Having soared to a lofty 16 runs in the game before, the Spartans couldn't push the score so high this time.

Oswego East typically has all the answers at home, but on Tuesday Kaneland proved too difficult a challenge. They blew past the Wolves 16-4. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Knights.

Brynn Woods was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Angelina Campise was a standout: she went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Graycin Slou, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Kaneland kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Kaneland's record now sits at 13-10. As for Sycamore, they moved to 20-3-1 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

Sycamore was able to grind out a solid victory over Kaneland in their previous meeting two weeks ago, winning 3-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
