Softball Recap: Vance Charter Comes Up Short

After flying high against Voyager Academy on Wednesday, Vance Charter came back down to earth. The Knights fell just short of the Oxford Prep Griffins by a score of 4-3 on Thursday. The Knights were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Griffins earlier this season, when they won 3-2.

Leah Rice spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four runs (all of which were unearned) on seven hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Ava Lovings made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Kendall Ayscue, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run.

Vance Charter has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-5 record this season. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the defeats came by an average of only 1.67 runs. As for Oxford Prep, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 13-2.

Vance Charter has already played their next matchup, a 5-3 victory against Franklin Academy on the 22nd. As for Oxford Prep, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 2-0 win against Falls Lake Academy on the 21st.
