Baseball Recap: Bellevue Victorious

While Bellevue's victory against Newport wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Tigers sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 win over the Wildcats on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Tigers have posted against the Wildcats since May 13, 2019.

Wyatt Lewis spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up nine Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Jacob Berning was excellent, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Bellevue's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is undefeated (and 4-14 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Cameron Hensley, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Bellevue has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-14 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for Newport, their loss dropped their record down to 0-16.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Bellevue will square off against Newport Central Catholic at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Newport, they will challenge Bracken County at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
