Basketball Recap: Statesville Beats St. Stephens for Their Fourth Straight Victory

Statesville waltzed into their contest on Friday with three straight wins... but they left with four. Everything went their way against the St. Stephens Indians as they made off with a 75-51 win. The Greyhounds pushed the score to 57-37 by the end of the third, a deficit the Indians had little chance of recovering from.

Statesville's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Caleb Tillman led the charge by going 9 of 15 on his way to 21 points and eight rebounds. Tillman is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Paul Cauthen, who went 5 for 11 en route to 12 points in addition to eight boards and seven assists.

Statesville was working as a unit and finished the game with 23 assists. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now racked up at least 21 assists in three consecutive matches.

Despite the loss, St. Stephens had strong showings from Jachavis Sherrill, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds, and Noah Vanbeurden, who went 8 of 16 on his way to 20 points. With that strong performance, Sherrill is now averaging an impressive 8.1 boards per game.

Statesville has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 9-6 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 73.0 points per game. As for St. Stephens, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-11 record this season.

Statesville wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 71-62 victory against Hickory on the 21st. St. Stephens has also already played their next game, a 77-60 win against Foard on the 21st.
