Softball Recap: Montgomery Takes a Loss

Montgomery extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 11-8 in the process. They lost 11-3 to the Hilltop Lancers. The Aztecs were not able to make up for their defeat to the Lancers from their previous meeting back in February of 2024.

Montgomery saw eight different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gisela Acosta, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double. Another was Isabella Navarro, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one triple and one RBI.

As for Hilltop, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-7-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games.

On Hilltop's side, Catherine Vasquez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits and racked up nine Ks.

At the plate, Nevaeh Matos and Olivia Mertz did most of the damage at the plate: Matos went 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles, while Mertz went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and three runs. That's the most doubles Matos has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaylani Sablan, who went 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI.

Montgomery has already played their next game, a 22-5 loss against Sweetwater on the 15th. As for Hilltop, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, an 11-2 defeat against Clairemont on the 16th.
