Baseball Recap: Waitsburg/Prescott Takes a Loss

Waitsburg/Prescott extended their losing streak to four on Friday, dropping their season record down to 6-6 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Pomeroy Pirates. The Cardinals were not able to make up for their defeat to the Pirates from their previous meeting back in April of 2016.

As for Pomeroy, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 9-7. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games.

For Pomeroy's part, Jett Slusser was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out 13 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Slusser is becoming a predictor of Pomeroy's success: when he posts at least ten strikeouts the team is undefeated (and 6-7 when he doesn't). Slusser was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. That triple was his first of the season.

In other batting news, Nolan Newberg was excellent, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Conrad Nelson, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Waitsburg/Prescott beat Pomeroy by a score of 16-3 later that day.
