Basketball Recap: Exeter-West Greenwich Wins High-Profile Contest Against Lincoln School

On Tuesday, Exeter-West Greenwich faced Lincoln School in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Exeter-West Greenwich Scarlet Knights escaped with a win against the Lincoln School Lynx by the margin of a single free throw, 46-45. The victory was familiar territory for the Scarlet Knights who have now won five games in a row.

Leading Exeter-West Greenwich to victory were Niniola Olawuyi and Kate Hebert. Olawuyi went 7 of 9 en route to 18 points and five boards, while Hebert went 8 for 17 on her way to 17 points in addition to seven rebounds and four steals. With that strong performance, Olawuyi is now averaging an impressive 15.1 points per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Brielle Frenette, who posted five points.

Lincoln School's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sarah Berube, who scored 12 points and four steals. Berube is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 20 games she's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Reign Whiteing, who put up 15 points along with eight rebounds and five blocks.

Exeter-West Greenwich pushed their record up to 15-3 with the win, which was their third straight at home. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to field goal percentage: their shooting accuracy was 41.8% in those games and 28% outside of them. As for Lincoln School, their defeat ended a six-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 11-1.

Exeter-West Greenwich is taking a road trip to face off against Hope at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Lincoln School has already played their next matchup, a 62-20 victory against Woonsocket on the 30th.
