Basketball Recap: Mattoon Comes Up Short

Mattoon was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They lost to the Richland County Tigers on the road by a 59-43 margin. The Greenwave were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Tigers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Richland County got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Leah Gibson out in front who went 7 of 13 from beyond the arc on her way to 24 points and five rebounds. The dominant performance gave Gibson a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Aliyah Flittner, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten boards.

Mattoon's defeat dropped their record down to 6-20. As for Richland County, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 14-11.

Mattoon has already played their next match (against Taylorville), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Richland County has also has no score uploaded for their next contest, this one against Lawrenceville.
