Preview: Springtown Porcupines vs. Decatur Eagles
After two games on the road, Springtown is heading back home. They will take on The Decatur Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, Springtown got the win against Mineral Wells by a conclusive 48-28. Given Springtown's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 231st, while Mineral Wells is ranked 594th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Springtown's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Drake Doggett led the charge by rushing for 99 yards and two touchdowns on only 13 carries. Another player making a difference was Nathan Johnson, who rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Decatur had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 28.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They took their matchup at home with ease, bagging a 58-0 win over Wichita Falls.
Decatur can attribute much of their success to Jed Ross, who threw for 192 yards and three touchdowns, and Nate palmer, who rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 7.9 yards per carry.
Springtown's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 5-2. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 36.8 points per game. Decatur has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a massive bump to their 4-4 record this season.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's contest: Springtown has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 244.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Decatur struggles in that department as they've been averaging 215.9 per game. It's looking like Friday's match might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Springtown was dealt a bruising 47-6 defeat at the hands of Decatur in their previous matchup back in October of 2022. Thankfully for Springtown, Preston Escobar (who threw for 152 yards and two touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
