Baseball Recap: Maria Carrillo Comes Up Short

Maria Carrillo extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping their season record down to 9-9 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost an 11-9 heartbreaker at the hands of the Rancho Cotate Cougars. That's two games in a row now that the Pumas have lost by exactly two runs.

Zach Brandt made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Maria Carrillo's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 7-8 when he doesn't). Max Petersen was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

As for Rancho Cotate, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-6 record this season. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for they considering their two-run performance the contest before.

On Rancho Cotate's side, the team relied heavily on Gauge Cummings, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those two runs gave Cummings a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Jett Derammelaere, who went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Maria Carrillo will square off against De Anza at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Rancho Cotate, they will head out to face off against Kelseyville at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Knights will roll in looking for their ninth straight victory, something the Cougars surely won't give up without a fight.
