League recap: Gilchrist breaks off league-leading run for Jefferson County

3A Region 7 recap Sept. 26, 2012

Cody Gilchrist of Jefferson County ran for the longest rushing play in 3A Region 7 this season against South Pike last week. Gilchrist scampered for 60 yards on the play and finished with 105 on the day as his team beat the Eagles.

Hazlehurst extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating East Marion, 26-8. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Indians.

Wilkinson County's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Devin Voorhies threw for 81 and one touchdown and Allenzae Staggers had 55 yards receiving. On the ground Nicholas Hull chipped in 176 yards. Trae McKenzie helped Wilkinson County's passing attack out by catching five balls for 33 yards.

6-foot-0 quarterback Kenneth Coleman of Hazlehurst is the league leader in passing yards this season with 798. He has also thrown nine touchdowns. On the ground, the Wildcats' Hull has rushed for 511 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Staggers. The Wilkinson County star has 28 catches for 421 yards.

Two of the top units in 3A Region 7 will face off this week when Randal Montgomery's team takes on Prentiss. The Indians' offense has racked up 160 points this season, earning them the top spot in the league, while the Bulldogs have allowed only 183 on the year.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Franklin County takes on Wilkinson County. As it stands, the Bulldogs are in third, while the Wildcats are in first.

Franklin County took down Lawrence County 40-7 last week, the largest margin of any game.
