Basketball Recap: Ty'reese Burnett Key Part of a Team Effort in Cardinals Win

Southport's game last Friday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Saturday. They walked away with a 54-47 victory over the Franklin Community Grizzly Cubs. The Cardinals have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Grizzly Cubs, too.

Southport's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ty'Reese Burnett, who went 5 of 7 en route to 13 points along with six rebounds and five steals. Burnett continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of James Kalala, who posted 12 points and eight boards.

Franklin Community's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Kolt Nelson, who shot 5-for-9 from long range and almost dropped a double-double on 21 points and nine rebounds, and Tony Barnes, who put up 14 points and four steals.

Southport's victory bumped their record up to 9-7. As for Franklin Community, they have also been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-10 record this season.

Southport will head out to challenge Decatur Central at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Decatur Central is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 57.6 points per game this season. As for Franklin Community, they will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Warren Central at 1:30 p.m.
