Basketball Recap: Gretna Hawks vs. Altavista Colonels

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Parry McCluer, the Gretna Hawks were happy to have found some success on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 52-36 win over Altavista. That's another feather in the cap for Gretna, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.

Gretna's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Shakira Jones led the charge by scoring 18 points along with six rebounds and two steals. That makes it four consecutive games in which Jones has scored at least a third of Gretna's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashley Myers, who scored 11 points along with two steals.

Gretna's win bumped their record up to 7-11. As for Altavista, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-13 record this season.

Gretna will square off against the Raiders at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Appomattox County will be looking to keep their five-game home win streak alive. As for Altavista, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against the Fighting Blues at 2:00 p.m. on February 3rd. Parry McCluer is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last 11 games.
